Introduction to Expandable Polystyrene (EPS) and its areas of use

About EPS:

Expandable Polystyrene (EPS), also known as “Styrofoam”, is the material, expanded beads of which are moulded into various products. The structure comes from the polymerization of styrene monomer raw material with pentane, hence its name - polystyrene.
Nature of EPS provides it the characteristic features: high insulation and high compression values, shock absorption values and the resistance against humidity. The biggest advantage of it is the balance between its price and its performance. Expanded EPS products consist of many porous cells, with trapped air inside. Its density is relatively low and therefore it is very light, as the air ratio is approximately %98. Therefore, EPS makes as one of the most economic, eco-friendly and reliable thermal insulating material.

Features of EPS products:

– An economic material

– A good filler material due to its low density

– Conserves insulation features over time

– Very low level of absorption

– Shock absorption

– Resistant to bacterial reproduction

– Easy to cut in any required shapes

– Usable for painting and printing on its surfaces

Area of use of EPS products:

– Insulation for almost all kind of construction

– Cooling plants, cold storages and commercial storages

– Light pre-fabric construction elements

– All kind of packaging

– Insulator in ground constructions and within concrete as the beads

– Roof and wall insulation in poultries and farms

– Decoration elements, such as EPS mouldings and ceiling tiles

Complex production line with various types of machines and equipment is required for the production of moulded EPS products. We will provide brief information in our next blog post.
